Third-party access may be time-limited or persistent. CISA’s current small-business vendor supply-chain guide says businesses should address physical and logical access risk before granting access and should ask vendors about authorization monitoring and offboarding.
The five-field exit test
| Field | Record | Evidence without secrets |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | The accountable system/data owner and the human authorized to change access. | Approval/ticket ID and responsible role—never a password, token, recovery code, or private key. |
| Scope | Accounts, roles, applications, physical areas, devices, integrations, support tunnels, and data classes actually authorized. | Sanitized inventory and least-privilege comparison. |
| End date | Contract/project end, maintenance window, staff separation, or access-review date. | Dated owner decision and any approved extension. |
| Revoke | Disable/remove accounts, sessions, keys/tokens, remote access, integrations, and physical credentials through the official owner-controlled route. | Provider/admin receipt, timestamp, and changed-state record with secrets redacted. |
| Retest | Confirm the former route no longer works while required business service still does. | Owner-authorized negative-access test, service-health check, repair if needed, and final retest. |
Safe AI assistance
AI can help turn a sanitized inventory into a checklist or compare intended scope to documented roles. Do not paste credentials, tokens, private logs, customer/student data, network diagrams, internal hostnames, or exploitable configurations into public AI services. A human system owner must approve every access change.
Repair, retest, preserve evidence
- Back up configuration or preserve rollback capability where the system supports it.
- Remove one verified access path at a time.
- Retest both former access and required service function.
- Repair only the failed control, then retest.
- Store a non-secret receipt and next-review date.
Authorization boundary
Use this method only on accounts, systems, facilities, devices, and data you own or are explicitly authorized to manage. Do not test another person’s access, scan third-party systems, impersonate a vendor, bypass controls, or publish private security details.
What Louisville Institute of Technology can contribute
LIT can teach small organizations to inventory, revoke, repair, retest, and preserve evidence. It does not act as the vendor, system owner, legal adviser, incident responder, or independent security assessor unless separately engaged and authorized.
